Leading sarod player of India, Partho Sarothy and American sitarist Paul Livingstone are disciples of the legendary Pandit Ravi Shankar and have been performing together for over 20 years giving concerts in India, Mexico and the United States.
Their sensitive approach to the dynamics of raga alaap emphasizes an exploration of emotional depth. Their interactive approach then transitions into the excitement of rhythmic intensity through improvisations typical of the Maihar gharana tradition and the jugalbandi style made famous by their guru and Ustad Ali Akbar Khan. Their international work together demonstrates their sonic unity and compatibility that artists from different cultures can bring forth within the rigorous form of classical raga music. As soloists they have played with most of the leading tabla players of India, Pakistan and Nepal including Ustad Zakir Hussain, Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri, Pandit Hom Nath Upadhyaya, Ustad Bashir Khan among many others.
